June 15th, 2004 Tuesday
"I'm 13. My father's health is in bad condition. He's earning our living by cutting the bamboo and working for others, while my mother has left home for 6 years. She's never given us a message. I have 6 brothers and sisters. I want to learn, I want to read, but I still have not paid the full tuition for this semester yet." "I'm 11. I have 2 older brothers, who have dropped out of school and are now working, supporting my family. One of my brothers lost his two fingers when he worked in a factory and now has no choice but to stay home. My mother has has left home to find a job. She's gone for 2 years and has not sent us money. I love Chinese and math. I want to read." "After I graduated in 1994, I came here to teach these kids. Then I went back to school and returned later as principal." ... These words always come across my heart these days, reminding me of something that I can't ignore no matter how busy I am. As I looked outside the window, those snapshots are flashing in front of me again...
On the morning of June 12th, 2004, morning, as before, I packed my bags, grabbed my gears, and moved out. The difference this time, however, is that I'm not going only for hiking this time, but for those kids hungering for schooling. It's really my luck and pleasure that, I, what we call, a "donkey", for those who love hiking on foot, have a chance to go out with rangers, who have their cars. The convoy moved out and I was assigned to the car carrying all the stuff for those kids, such as books, basketballs, and things like that. Do I look so cool and strong that I'm the good one to protect the core Humvee from being ambushed? My honor... It took us about 90 minutes to get into the mountain area where the scenery is quite different from outside. The hills are quilted with green trees, the ponds are dispersed with buffalos, the blue sky are sprouted with white clouds, Woo, I've escaped from the noisy city. what are those kids doing now? Oh, I heard drums from not far away, yeah, here we are. Dozens of boys lined along the road welcoming us, drumming excitedly. I got out of the Humvee with my DC in hand, taking pictures of the best school in this town, being eager to understand their life. This is a typical school with one 4-floor building and a playground where almost all the students and teachers are waiting for us. Frankly speaking, I'm not used of this situation. It's too formal. I prefer being together with the natives casually. So I walked around, getting insided each room to see their classrooms and bedrooms. Not bad, they are to study out here. But what about those who are on mountains and have no chance to get outside? Lots of boys and girls surrounded me, with a little shyness and nervousness. I can easily feel the excitement from their eyes. When I asked them to take a photo, they shouted and smiled with great joy. Yes, I've saved their innocent smiling. What a significance if all kids could be able to smile like this! I can't wait for the opportunity to climb, to see those kids who need a glimpse of the outside world. After having lunch, small groups moved out to visit different areas and I was assigned to the primary school on top of a hill, Songbai school, which means school with pine trees. Being a little bit frustrated, I'd to abandon my plan to go up on foot because we had to come back on time, to show a video for the kids. After 30 minutes driving, we arrived at the school, with hurting bottoms and dizzy heads, because of terrible road condition. Oh, my, I should have climbed it on foot. With the red national flag jumping inside my eyes, I walked inside the school. It has 4 classrooms, and several other restrooms, and a small playground at the center. The principal told us this school can only provide the primary education from grade 1 to grade 4, They only have 4 teachers, including the principal. Each teacher teaches Chinese, math, music, nature, society, and PE as well. Sigh! They need teachers, not only funds. It's an urgent mission for our society to create a good environment to keep the valuable human resource. "We must teach the kids, letting them understand that only if they try their best and study hard, can they change their poor situation." I said to myself. Walking inside each classroom, I talked with the kids, asking them what they're reading, and what they like most. I also asked them how long it takes them to travel here from their homes. Then we chose 6 kids of the poorest students and had a chat with them face to face. You've known the conversations, I'm sure, for I've put at the beginning. Here are some figures: The kids have to take a 90-minute walk to come here from their homes; There are average 4 kids in each family; The average annual income is between 600 to 1000 yuan for each family. Most of the kids will have to abandon their further education after studying out here. Only few have the opportunity in each family with borrowed money; The oldest kid at grade 4 is 14 years old. ... When I said to the principal that I admire him for what he's done for these kids and "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.". He then replied in a humble way, that it's his imperative mission to teach the kids because they are the future of his hometown. "A good man." I said to myself. I recommended to him we try our best to let girls continue their education, because when we teach a girl, we teach a whole family, and a whole generation. Speaking of what we're doing out here, I said we're just doing a little, with our heart, to deserve the acknowledgement they've given us. We got down the hill and were back to the school in town with a heavy heart, silently. When can those good men fulfill their dreams? The sky was getting darker and darker. We were busy in setting up the projector while crowd of people waiting with excitement. The film is "The lotus lantern", telling a fairy tale of a kid who is separated from his mother by a god and tries his best to fight with the god, saving his mother eventually. The kid sticks on his dream, pursuing his happiness and fights like a warrior. There is a conversation between him and his mother, giving me a great impression. "What's happiness, mum?" "The happiness is we can live together happily for ever, you, me, and your father." "Got it. I'll fight for the happiness with whole my life!" We, guys from the urban city, always being surrounded by busy work and have not enough time to settle our mind down for the question, "What's happiness", watched the movie quietly with those kids. I'm sure it's touched each one's heart. And the principal's definition of happiness is, "To spread knowledge is to spread happiness....The progress of scientific research and the ever expanding fields will arouse hope while the bacteria existence in our body and mind will gradually disappear." It was midnight after the movie was finished and I set up my tent, laying down on the playground. The kids, the teachers, the smiles on the honest faces, the simple words, the mountain, and the streams flashed in front of me. I couldn't fall asleep before I made up my mind to continue my walk the next day, preparing for my introducing English and computer science to those kids when I come here again...
"Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can."
