To promote Sino-French cultural exchanges and to enable Wuhan citizens to enjoy the grand international cultural feast of World Expo, the International Exchange and Communication Center of the Publicity Department of CPC Wuhan Committee joins hands with Wuhan Art Museum and other units to introduce and hold the Marc Riboud, L'instinct de l'instant - 50 ans de Photographie.. This photography exhibition is an important cultural exchange program of France in World Expo 2010 which received warm response when held successively in Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and Macao this year.
Marc Riboud, the 88-year-old world-renowned master in documentary photography, participated in the establishment of famous Magnum Photos. He has left traces all over the world, winning several international awards such as the Overseas Press Club Award for twice, the Lifetime Achievement Award for once as well as the Lucie Awards for once. Many museums around Europe, the United States and Japan put his works on show regularly. He has been to China for 22 times since the year of 1957 and was the first foreign photographer ever allowed to take photos of Chinese leaders at close range. Using his unique artistic vision, acute humanist thoughts and rich image language, he captured moments of new China’s development one after another, giving an objective description to the western world about vicissitudes and tremendous changes that took place in new China, making positive contribution to the promotion of cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, as well as the development of Chinese photographic art.
During nearly sixty years of his life as a photographer, humanism, powerful composition and poetic sense of rhythm have always been the main characteristics of his works. Marc Riboud's works are not always about world-shaking scenes. In fact, during his visits to different countries, he focused on taking pictures of changes in local people's lives. He’d like to reflect times of significance through life details. Marc Riboud, believing in the "Decisive Moment" theory proposed by his predecessor and mentor, Robert Bresson, has been snapping all his life. For him, "Photography is a moment of intuition; it is snapshot." Meanwhile, being a former engineer, his particular obsession with lines and the beauty of them has been the reason for him to press the button. The works of Marc Riboud's, no matter they are documentary or pure photography, are all stamped with unique temperament of image--instinctive, poetic and reflecting rationality through reality.
This exhibition will display 120 pieces of his works including some precious photos which have not been shown to the public before. More than half of them reflect construction and development of China. What deserves particular attention is that the Marc Riboud Studio collected and developed five photos that reflect Wuhan’s situation during the primary development period after the founding of People’s Republic of China. They sent all of those five photos to Wuhan Municipal Government as gifts, which will help remind visitors of the good old days in those special years.
Unlike Marc Riboud’s previous photographic exhibitions, this time it will fully embody the ideal of his works. The works take photographed subjects as a clue in order to revivify real image language. The exhibition will give full consideration to visitors’ visual habits and needs, embodying coordination and resonation of neighboring works. Thus, by giving natural guidance to visitors in their visions and souls, they will hopefully get a better understanding of exquisite impression of Marc Riboud’s humanistic works. Through appreciating the works with a relaxed mood, they can have an unobstructed communication with both the photographer and the photographed subjects. Just as what Marc Riboud said, “As for me, photography is never a suffering. The process is a relaxing and natural enjoyment”.
